You Cannot Diminish the Portal and Expect Humanity to Thrive

There is something almost absurd about the amount of human history spent trying to convince women that they are somehow the lesser sex. Women have been restricted, controlled, spoken for, underestimated, sexualized, infantilized, and repeatedly told that their emotions make them unreliable. Even the casual habit of calling grown women “girls” can carry that same undertone depending on how it is used. A grown man gets to be a man. A grown woman somehow remains a girl well into adulthood. Language seems small until you realize how often language teaches people where they supposedly belong.

Here is where the whole arrangement becomes rather ridiculous: every man who has ever participated in diminishing women began his existence inside one. Every emperor, president, general, billionaire, scientist, dictator, preacher, king, and ordinary man began the same way. Before he had authority, money, muscles, opinions, titles, weapons, property, or power, he was completely dependent upon the body of a woman for his development. That does not make women superior to men. It makes the historical insistence that women are naturally inferior remarkably difficult to defend.

Pregnancy alone should have ended the conversation about female weakness centuries ago. A pregnant body changes its cardiovascular system, blood volume, metabolism, hormones, immune function, organs, connective tissues, and countless other processes to support another developing human. The placenta itself is an extraordinary temporary organ created during pregnancy to facilitate the exchange necessary for fetal development. A woman's body does not simply provide a convenient room for nine months. It participates in an enormous biological process requiring continuous adaptation.

Then there is genetics. Human beings inherit mitochondrial DNA primarily through the maternal line. A typical male, with XY sex chromosomes, receives his X chromosome from his mother and Y chromosome from his father. A typical female receives an X chromosome from each parent. None of this establishes a biological hierarchy between women and men, because biology is far more interesting than that. It does, however, make one thing wonderfully clear: women were never some optional supporting character in the human story.

Yet cultures across history managed to take this extraordinary biological capacity and turn women into possessions, reproductive resources, domestic labor, sexual objects, or people requiring male supervision. Women's legal rights to property, education, voting, employment, financial independence, bodily autonomy, and political participation have all been restricted somewhere in human history. Those restrictions were not evidence that women were incapable. In many cases, the restrictions themselves prevented women from demonstrating publicly what they were perfectly capable of doing.

Perhaps one of the most effective methods of diminishing women has been teaching them to distrust themselves. Female intuition gets dismissed as being emotional, dramatic, sensitive, paranoid, hormonal, or irrational. Yet what people casually call intuition can sometimes involve very ordinary cognitive processes. Human brains constantly notice patterns, facial expressions, changes in tone, inconsistencies, previous experiences, environmental cues, and tiny pieces of information that may never reach conscious awareness individually. The resulting feeling can arrive before someone can explain exactly what produced it.

That does not mean every intuitive feeling is correct. Nobody's intuition comes with a scientific guarantee, regardless of sex. It means automatically dismissing a woman's perception because she cannot immediately produce a spreadsheet explaining it is equally foolish. Emotional intelligence, social awareness, pattern recognition, memory, and learned experience are forms of information processing. Emotion is information too. It can require interpretation, but throwing it into an imaginary garbage bag marked “female emotions” wastes potentially useful information.

The strangest part is that diminishing women ultimately damages far more than women. Human beings develop inside relationships, families, communities, and cultures. When women are deprived of education, resources, safety, autonomy, opportunity, or the ability to make decisions about their own lives, the consequences do not politely stop with them. Children are raised inside those conditions. Families operate inside them. Communities inherit them. Beliefs and behaviors travel from one generation into another.

You cannot systematically damage one half of a species and expect the entire species to operate beautifully. That should be common sense. If women are expected to carry pregnancies, raise children, maintain households, regulate everyone else's emotions, contribute economically, care for aging relatives, support partners, and hold communities together while simultaneously being told that their judgment, authority, intelligence, sexuality, ambition, anger, boundaries, and independence require male approval, eventually something breaks.

And there is another uncomfortable reality worth discussing. The old threat that women cannot survive without men has lost much of the practical power it once carried. Women can own property, earn money, run companies, govern countries, raise families, pursue education, create communities, and build independent lives. Modern reproductive medicine has also changed what is technologically possible, although human reproduction still requires genetic material from both egg and sperm under current established reproductive biology. Women do not need to diminish men to establish their own value. They simply need to stop accepting the claim that male value automatically outranks theirs.

That is where matriarchy interests me, although perhaps not in the way some people assume. I have no interest in replacing one boot with another and celebrating because the foot inside it changed sex. Female empowerment does not require male humiliation. I am interested in women remembering their authority over themselves. Their minds. Their bodies. Their boundaries. Their work. Their sexuality. Their choices. Their creativity. Their futures. A woman recognizing her own power does not steal power from a man. If his power disappears when hers appears, what he possessed was control.

Men absolutely have value. Fathers matter. Partners matter. Brothers matter. Sons matter. Male intelligence, creativity, protection, tenderness, leadership, invention, labor, and contribution have shaped human civilization alongside women's contributions. Partnership between capable adults makes considerably more sense than manufacturing a hierarchy and spending generations arguing about who deserves the top chair.

But partnership requires respect, and respect becomes impossible when one person must shrink so another can feel tall. Calling women irrational does not make men rational. Calling women weak does not make men strong. Calling grown women girls does not make men more powerful. Controlling women does not prove male superiority. It proves that somebody believed female freedom was threatening enough to require control.

Women are not supporting characters in the human story. They are authors, builders, thinkers, workers, creators, leaders, lovers, mothers when they choose motherhood, and complete human beings when they do not. Their reproductive capacity is extraordinary, but a woman's worth cannot be reduced to her uterus either. Calling women the portal of life is recognition of a biological reality and a powerful metaphor. It should never become another box women are required to live inside.

So perhaps the smarter future is neither patriarchy nor a reversed version of it. Perhaps it is women refusing to surrender their value and men understanding that equality never required their disappearance. Humanity has spent enough time confusing dominance with strength. A species capable of extraordinary intelligence should eventually become intelligent enough to understand something remarkably simple: you cannot keep diminishing the people who create, raise, teach, build, lead, love, and sustain human life and then act surprised when humanity suffers for it.

Women never needed permission to have value. They needed the noise telling them otherwise to become quiet enough for them to remember it.
